Facebook Fan Page Vs Personal Page

Business owners often don't realize that there are two types of Facebook pages, a Personal Page and a Fan Page. A Personal page is a private walled page that allows you to let others in by "friending" them. A Fan page is for businesses, organizations and groups where people can follow you by "liking" your page. A business page is public and not walled and anyone can follow you.

You can think about it like owning a home (Personal Page) versus owning a restaurant (Fan Page). With your home you can either invite people over or they can knock on your door before you allow them to enter. With your restaurant, anyone can walk in.

After you sign up for a Facebook personal page account, you begin the process of requesting friends and accepting friends to build your circle. As friends make posts, their posts appear in your feed. In turn as you make posts, your posts appear in their feed. Then each friend can make a comment on a post or share a post with others.

Becoming a Fan of a business page, on the other hand, doesn't require an invite, nor need to be approved. So, again, keep in mind that it is public.

Once a person becomes a fan of your business, a message appears in their personal feed that you “Liked” the business. The message is visible to all of their friends. Ideally, when a friend sees that you "liked" a business, it may make them curious to see what they like and in turn "like" your business. It's a digital equivalent to word of mouth or a referral.

Now, any posts you make on your business’ fan page appears inside the personal feed of each of your fans. What makes it powerful is that it's opt in. Which means the fan is inviting your messages. Unlike most traditional advertising is not viewed as an intrusion or interruption.

Posts on your Fan page can include specials, tips, advice, industry related news. Or things that don't directly relate to the business that the business may want to aligned themselves with. Like causes or local community events.

As your grow fans you begin to build a network of you current and potential customer base. The beauty of it is that it's a network that doesn't cost you anything to advertise on. And the more you use it the more likely it is to grow.

One other tip to keep in mind is that before you create Fan page, you must first have a personal page. When you create a Fan page, you become the Fan page admin. You can then add additional admins to your page. A person needs to be a fan of the page first in order to become an admin.

To access your fan page, you first login to your personal page, from there you're able to switch to your fan page. Once you switch, you are then making posts as the business and no longer posting as an individual. Once completed, you then can switch back to your personal page.
